Talking Illustration by John Vernon Lord is an eclectic and personal set of strategies for creative thinking. Talking Illustration is a record of a time John visited the University of Brighton to talk to students about illustration. At the end of the lecture, John recited a list of prompts when asked to explain how to stay creative and active as an illustrator.
‘On one of the annual occasions when John Vernon Lord returned to the University of Brighton to deliver a lecture, I was privileged to spend some quiet time to chat with him. He’s a great resource of information and advice having written the course at Brighton and being the first professor of Illustration in the UK. An almost encyclopaedic memory which John puts down to being an obsessive note writer, diarist, and prolific sketchbook keeper. At times the sketches, notebooks, diaries overlap and are worlds themselves — there is often a written commentary, an acute awareness of the act of drawing or making an illustration.’ – Roderick Mills, Course Leader for Illustration, University of Brighton, UK.
